গোলাপের কাঁটা যেমন আছে মধুও সাথে
আমি তাকে পাবো, তবে ভালবাসা বা অর্থের জন্য নয়;
একটি চোখের মনি খুব সোজা এবং সূক্ষ্মভাবে বাড়ে
সে তো আমার কোন বন্ধু হবে না;
তুষারের মতো তুষারপাতের কণা আমাকে শীতল করবে;
নিশি-ছায়া আমাকে আদর করবে এবং মেরে ফেলবে;
বর্শার মতো পুনর্জন্মে প্রস্ফুটিত বিশুদ্ধ ক্রোকাস আমাকে ভয় দেখাবে;
ড্রাগন ফুলেরা ঘেউ ঘেউ করবে বা আমাকে কামড়াবে;
কনভলভুলাস কিন্তু বিকশিত হবার সময় মারা যায়
বায়ুপরাগী পুষ্প টা দীর্ঘশ্বাসের পরামর্শ দেয়;
প্রেম-মিথ্যা-রক্তপাত আমাকে দুঃখ দেয়;
পপি বীজের রস আমাকে পাগল করে দেবে :-
তবে আমাকে হোলি বৃক্ষের সাহসিকতা এবং প্রফুল্লতা দাও,
একটা সরল হোলি গাছ, কাঁটাযুক্ত এবং উজ্জ্বল;
হোলির পাতা ছিড়ে ও তার ফলও পেড়ে আমাকে দাও
সে দিনের জন্য যখন আমি আনন্দ করি।

But give me holly, bold and jolly,
Honest, prickly, shining holly;
Pluck me holly leaf and berry
For the day when I make merry.
